” Little Women,” first published in 1868, is without a doubt the most well known of Louisa May Alcott’s works (which are substantial, spanning over four decades). The novel follows the lives of four sisters throughout the U.S. Civil War, and is loosely based on Alcott’s own experiences growing up in Massachusetts with her sisters, Elizabeth (Beth), Anna (Meg), and May (Amy). In the novel, Josephine (Jo) plays the part of Louisa, herself. Alcott is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, Massachusetts, sharing her final resting place with other personages of literary note, among them Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and of course, Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Read a review of the dramatic adaptation of Little Women at The British Theatre Guide.
