The Seattle Times ran this brief, but significant, story this morning, which is also the subject of Dave Ross’ KIRO AM radio show today–
Paper or plastic? Each bag would cost you 20 cents extra under Nickels’ plan
By Sharon Pian Chan
Seattle Times staff reporterCustomers would be charged a 20-cent “green fee” per bag, Nickels said in a statement released this morning. The mayor says it would reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
The tax would require approval by the City Council. If passed, it would take effect Jan. 1.
Retailers would keep five cents of the fee to cover the cost of implementing the fee.
The mayor also proposed banning styrofoam food containers, which would affect restaurants, delis, fast-food outlets and coffee shops. If approved by the City Council, the foam ban would go into effect in 2010.

The tax on the bags is a bit overboard. The ban on styrofoam is great though.
